Firefighter Professional Standards

There are three levels of training for firefighters within South Carolina.  The basic level of firefighter is the  Basic Structural Firefighter Program (1152).  This program has been called several names in the past, most commonly called "OSHA Firefighter."  This training was designed to meet the basic requirements for firefighters by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.  The requirements of OSHA have not changed for firefighters.  However, the interpretation of the regulations set forth by OSHA, have changed.

The Basic Structural Firefighter Program (1152) is no longer considered to meet the requirements of the OSHA Standard.  This is now considered to be a step in the training to become an interior structural firefighter.  To become an interior structural firefighter and operate in an IDLH atmosphere, the firefighter should persue additional training to meet the standards set by the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA).  The Firefighter I standard is set in NFPA 1001 - Standard for Professional Firefighter Qualifications.

Professional Qualifications is not meant to discriminate between volunteer and career members of a department.  Professional Qualifications is a means to improve individual and department training and enhance the profession of firefighting.

This has become a hotly debated topic within the fire service, both on the volunteer and career deparments.  This is ridiculus.  How are we to improve our service, other than to train.  We as the members of the fire service, have a duty to the people we serve to be trained as professionals, and ready to respond in their time of need regardless of whether you are paid or volunteer.
